![]() Terra Cotta Warriors Museum
![]() Since its excavation in March 1974, the Terracotta Army stays as a bright star in tourism. It was constructed in the Qin Dynasty (211-206 BC) by Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of a united China. Every figure in the mausoleum differs from others around as for facial features and expression, clothing, hairstyle, and gestures. The horsemen, the longbow bearers, the archers and the senior officers and generals were positioned in strict accordance with the ancient directives on the Art of War. From the postures of the terracotta army, it is obvious that they held weapons then, like bronze swords, longbows, arrows, spears, dagger-axes and other long-shafted weapons. The Terracotta Army has lain underground for more than 2000 years. The first pit been discovered in 1974 was named Pit 1 and later in 1976, Pit 2 and Pit 3 were successively been excavated, about 20-25 meters from Pit 1. Among these three pits, the first one, covering an area of 1,4260 square meters, is the largest and bearing largest quantity of excavations, including 3 lines of warriors, 70 armies for each line and 40 lines of chariots, it hasn’t been fully excavated till today for the science and technology nowadays cannot guarantee the appearance when they are unearthed. The second pit, situated 20 m northeast of the first pit, occupying an area of 6000 square meters, is rated as the largest exhibition hall for historical relics with the most complete function. It is estimated that there can excavated more historical relics than in the first pit, while this pit, in large part, still remains un-discovered for better protecting the sites. The Pit 3 is the smallest, situated 25 m from the west of the first pit, at about 520 square meters, however, it is badly destroyed, we can still see the fragments scattering far and near. The earth and timber pits revealed battle formation in the Qin Dynasty, providing detailed artifacts for the study of the military, cultural and economic history of that period. The excavation was regarded as one of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century. In December 1987, the Qin Terracotta Warriors was admitted into the World Cultural Heritage List. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
