![]() The Bund
![]() The Bund is located in the eastern part of Huangpu District. There are 26 various buildings in different architectural styles at the west side of the Bund, such as Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and the Renaissance and so on. They have changed little externally since the 1930s. All of them were constructed in western-inspired styles, and most of them had already been impacted by the war. Have you ever heard about the 'the lovers' wall' in Shanghai? As a matter of fact, it is a 1,700-meters long flood-control wall, which is located on the side of Huangpu River from Huangpu Park to Xinkai River. It is a perfect choice for the romantic hollowed-out railings and nice position to take the 'snap-shot' of the scenery of Pudong Area and Huangpu River, which attracts many visitors every year. As it is well-known, Shanghai has a long history. Originally, here was a muddy narrow lane with tall reeds, and Shanghai was just a small village lives on fishing before the 1840s. After six years later, Shanghai became the trading port. After that, rows of commercial buildings appeared, and Shanghai got a big development at the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century as the UK Concession. At the same time, the Bund became a major financial hub of East China. With many banks, business and newspaper offices and consulates, the Bund became the political, economic and cultural center of Shanghai more than a hundred years ago. Now, you will understand why the buildings on this road have many different architectural styles. In order to boost tourism and land values in nearby area, Shanghai government carried out a 33-month upgrade construction project. After that, a new underground tunnel appeared and the 11 driveways on the Bund ground were compressed into 4 two-way lanes. Moreover, Huangpu Park, Chen Yi Square, the Bund Financial Square, and the Observatory Plaza were expanded. Currently, Bund waterfront came into being the expansive public activity space for visitors. Monument to the People's Heroes is located at the northern end of the Bund, along the riverfront, which is an abstract concrete tower built for those who died during the revolutionary struggle for Shanghai dating back to the Opium Wars. Hart Sculpture is located in front of Shanghai Custom House, which is in memory of Hurt, British Northern Irishman who had served as Secretary General of Chinese Customs up to 48 years. One of the most attracting parts is the night view of the Bund, which has been listed as the 'Shanghai top ten night light views' in 2009. It is fully exhibits the magnificence of the various buildings in different architectural styles and magnificent panorama groups of the buildings with colorful lights floating in the river and the flashing lights on the far side of the Huangpu River. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
